Not many of us think about the impact that our environment can and does have on our overall health and wellbeing.
There are lots of every day items and actions that could be effecting your hormones and fertility, in particular BPA and pthalates.
This is one area to aim for a balance rather than perfection. It is almost impossible to eradicate all potentially harmful toxins from your life and home. So try and find ways to minimise what you can, where you can.
Cleaning and laundry
To minimize exposure to pthalates, a good place to start is to replace laundry and other household cleaning supplies with fragrance-free and non-toxic products.
This can be expensive, so think about those products you use regularly (so come into regular contact with) or which touch your skin and will therefore be more likely to be absorbed (laundry detergent) and work to replace those first. As you use items up, look to replace them with non-toxic alternatives where you can afford to do so.
Food storage
BPA is not fertility friendly and I therefore strongly recommend that you review the containers you use to store, cook and transport food and drink in.
Where possible, remove and reduce all plastic containers and equipment from your kitchen. This includes plastic utensils, re-usable plastic storage containers and food wrap.
Where possible use glass or stainless steel. If you do have BPA-free products, then do not heat them (in a microwave or dishwasher) and avoid storing hot food in them.
Electrical equipment
Blue light from electronic devices can cause havoc with your sleep patterns, as it is disrupts the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin. Sleep is critical to maintaining balanced hormone levels. In order to optimise your fertility, manage your exposure to blue light and other electrical equipment, particularly close to bed time.
